Game Notes....

Brooksie, who was hit and bumped repeatedly each and every time he even thought of touching the ball had this memorable moment to add from last night's victory:

"No, my moment came at the start of the second half when just before inbounding the ball a member of the opposing team said out loud:

'Do you see what these guys look like? We can't lose to them.'

Do you think he meant we're too handsome to also be quality hoops players? I don't have a degree from Blankety blank College, so the nuances are probably lost on me."

Now I know It's tough looking like a group of young Brad Pitts, but please, don't hate us because we're beautiful...we can play a little ball too ya know... and just imagine if Larry "pretty boy",Toglia had been present!!!

Calamity and Noise Return!!! Pubbers show what they are made of nonetheless and make it 7-2!!!

They were baaaaacccckkkkkkkkkk....!!!!

Walking late into the Eastview gymnasium last night, I was greeted by something that can only be described as bedlam and deafening noise from the capacity crowd there to support our opponents!

They brought the same energy, the same fire and spirit, and they were even louder than I remember the first meeting between these two squads.

In fact, it got so bad that as the overflowing crowd clamored for additional seating rolled out chairs for the masses, only to be told they could not sit that close to the baseline!  I was expecting the Fire Warden to arrive and shut down the whole shebang but the officials at the gym kept everything under control off the court!

We had a short bench, missing many of our regulars, but the tight unit we had there pulled together like soldiers in a fox hole -- the spirited voices of our 5 young fans under the age of 10 straining to match the opponents' thundering noise after every basket or highlight for the young college students!!

An early but close lead in the first half was sustained late into the 2nd half as our opponents' main weapons seemed to be three pointers, prolonged screaming, clapping, and yammering at the lone referee!

Their main weapon, who did not miss a three early and probably had close to 15 points in the first half on threes alone, was met by a tenacious and stifling Pubber zone defense in the second half and according to my unofficial memory, was O-FER the entire second half!!!  and not shy putting the ball up either!

The Pubbers lost the lead late in the second only to battle back on some tough inside moves, rebounds and free throws - and forced overtime!

The Pubbers - despite the noise and catcalls - managed to go ahead by three with just 10 seconds left in overtime and with an iron fist tightening on defense were able to prevent any good shots by the young opponent as rhe clock wound down!

The Pubbers are now 7-2 and face a week off for school break!

Last night was a defining victory and a turning point for ther Pubbers in my opinion.  A loss last night could have set us back dramatically but we proved that we have what it takes to go all the way - game by game - despite our active roster any given game -  and we will keep that momentum going through the week long hiatus!!!

Three (3) games remain until the playoffs  -- We NEED all three wins and we are going to peak at the exact right time no doubt!!!

Enjoy the week off, Boys and be ready a week from Tuesday to continue the march!!!!

Feb 10th - Pubbers advance to 6-2 with a nice escape

GRITTY!!!

That quality has come to define the Pubbers this season to some degree and it held true last Thursday at Eastview gym as the Pubbers hung on until the final buzzer to escape with a victory!

Brooksie put on a show early to the point where one of our opponents muttered to his teammate - "That guy has not missed a shot."

And it was true!

A good team effort once again held off the last minute attempts by our opponents to hit a three and erase our lead but the basketball Gods smiled on us yet again and the last second shot came up short!!

The Pubbers were lifted by a visit from none other than Steve "Goose" Ryan who came to support his old team and watched us claim our sixth victory out of 8 games.

Ryan, looking slim and game ready, dodged all inquiries as to his possible return to the squad and possibly deferring his retirement plans.  Rumor has it he is playing elsewhere in a 3 on 3 league, waiting in the wings for a triumphant return to his old team and staying in shape - but the normally loquacious Ryan was mum on that topic, despite the grin that betrayed his hidden, true desire to don the old green vomitous jersey once again and stick some threes!

Perhaps a Championship Victory by the Pubbers will change his mind??  WE shall see!

More to come on that topic ---

Disclaimer: We do not condone the clubbing of anything at all - period!

Last night's victory in front of a sold out 3 fans, albeit dominating, crushing, and convincing, left little to be overly proud about when the final buzzer sounded.

Much like I imagine the "Head Baby Seal Clubber" does not go home to his wife and kids and brag about his "amazing day" at the shores, or the guy at Red Lobster who grabs the lobsters out of the tank puts "lobster fisherman" on his resume with pride, I do not take much pride in last night's victory.

A win is a win indeed, but we Pubbers must forget about last night and prepare for harder battles ahead. Last night was fun and felt good to our egos, but it was an anomaly and we have much more work to do if we are to capture the coveted prize!!

There were some highlights to the performance last night however that must be recognized:

Jeff was on fire with his jumper and did some serious damage very early to the opponent's will to live and fight.
Brooksie did not object to his new nickname and was slashing, cutting, and scoring at will all game.
TJ to brother Bill was a repeated play all night - and vice versa. You would think these guys grew up together (Never gets old, does it Brooksie?)
Bobby OT's return and performance was inspiring and some in the crowd uttered "GUTSY, Flawless, Yeoman - Better than CATS"
Bants was running the floor like MacArthur, shooting lights out and dishing like TMZ after Charlie Sheen's Hooker-Coke-Porn-Hospital-bash!
Henry, a beautiful sight effortlessly knocking down threes in warm ups like he never left the court, is eyeing the comeback day very closely!
And yours truly setting devastatingly effective picks on my own guys, heading loose balls, playing lackluster D on the only guy who scored all night and turning the ball over repeatedly.  ;)

The hollow victory brings us to 5-2 and right on track for the ultimate goal!!!!

But let's focus on the hard battles that await us!!

Pubbers Squeeze out tough victory - details foggy!

First of all let me say that I was unable to attend last week's contest (which stung me deeply - my teammates?  not so deeply) and that the Pubbers, according to first hand reports, held off a tough Sports Page team for a hard fought victory - increasing the Pubbers record to 4-2 in the league.

Details of performances were sketchy from the front-lines but TJ's appearance in the 2nd half proved to be a game changer inside I am told!

The quest marches on!
